Pen the Flock

JezzBall, with sheep. Build fences across the field to box the flock into smaller and smaller pens. Any ground you close off with no sheep in it turns to pasture. Clear 75% of the field to move on.

  • Click to start a fence. It grows both ways until it hits a fence or the edge.
  • Right-click or press Space to switch between across and up-and-down. On a phone, use the button.
  • A sheep that runs into a fence while it's still growing breaks that half, and you lose a life.
  • Take too long and the wolf comes for your fences. Level n has n + 1 sheep.

The Daily run is the same field and the same flock for everyone today (Mon, Nov 2); your best run of the day counts.

The flock

Power-ups

They turn up in open ground. Fence one in, or close it into pasture, and it's yours.

Scoring

10 points an acre you capture, times the level. Capture again within 3 seconds for a chain (×1.5, ×2, ×2.5…). 15% of the field in one go is a big pasture (+50%). A sheep penned alone in 32 acres or less: 250 × level. A wolf in a box: 1,000 × level. Finishing a level adds 100 × level for each life left, 20 × level for every acre past 75%, and 10 × level for each second before the wolf.

How it's built

The rules are one file, engine.js, that runs both in your browser and on the server. It only does whole-number maths on a fixed 60-steps-a-second clock with a seeded random generator, so the same seed and the same clicks always play out the same way, on any browser. That means a whole run is stored as just the seed plus a list of clicks: a few kilobytes for an hour of play. When you finish, the server re-plays your clicks itself and keeps its own score, so the leaderboard can't be fed a made-up number. Replays are the same trick played back on your screen.
