Weather Tracker

Every morning this page saves the 7-day forecast from several forecasters. Pick a day to see how its forecast moved over the week before it, and how close each forecaster got to what actually happened.

    Show as a table

Yesterday, and the next 8 days each source's latest call, against what actually happened

Click a day to see how its forecast moved. Spread is how far apart the forecasters' highs are; a big spread means they disagree.

      How it works

      • At 7:00 AM America/Chicago time a scheduled job asks every source for its forecast and saves the next 8 days (day-of through 7 days out). If the site was restarting at 7, it catches up on boot. Each source is saved once a day.
      • So a day's forecast gets snapshotted 8 times, a week out through that morning. That's the chart.
      • Actual weather comes from the KDFW observation station (via the National Weather Service): the highest and lowest reported temperature midnight to midnight, and the rain it logged. Hourly readings can miss the true peak by about a degree.
      • Low means that morning's low. The National Weather Service states lows as "tonight", so its low for a day is the night before; a morning capture can't include that day's low because it already happened.
      • Built with Node, Express and PostgreSQL. Every API response is kept for 90 days so a parsing bug can be fixed without losing a day. The chart is plain SVG, no chart library.
